This Event: Wed 11/30 Hukilau Hawaiian, Palo Alto Coming Events: Wed 11/30 Hukilau Hawaiian, Palo Alto Tues 12/6 First Tuesday at Carole & Bill's Thurs 12/8 Peking Duck, Los Altos Wed 12/14 JinMi Korean, Sunnyvale Time: 7:45 pm Place: Da Hukilau 642 Ramona Street (1 1/2 blks south of University Ave) Palo Alto, CA 94301 650-329-9533 www.dahukilau.com Description: Three guys from the islands wanted a homestyle restaurant, so they started one - they've now got three, in SF, SJ, and recently in Palo Alto. Informal dining, music on weekends. The menu emphasizes fish and pork, with teriyaki, soups, several kinds of loco moco, and the usual sandwiches, mac salad, and spam musubi. There are a couple of vegetarian choices - a tofu version of their poke salad, which I liked, and vegiburgers. Laura didn't think the saimin soup tasted like it did when she was growing up on Maui, but the owners are from Kauai, Hawaii, and Oahu, so it was somebody else's family recipes. Some of the reviews say they didn't have a liquor license yet, but they appear to have fixed that and have the usual Polynesian drinks. Michael has been suggesting that Kabuki-West go to a Hawaiian place. Besides Hukilau, there's J&J in Menlo Park and a takeout place in the Showers Drive Walmart area (Lani kai?). (There's also Da Kitchen near Shoreline movies, but it closes too early.) J&J is strictly styrofoam counter service, with Hawaiian barbecue and plate lunch and really good steam-table Chinese takeout. It's open moderately late, and you can eat in. Kabuki-West went to Hukilau in June 2005, and I'd recommend RSVPs because their location is a bit cramped. Directions: 101 to University Ave West, Left on Ramona, 1 1/2 blocks. Parking is the usual - the garage at Bryant & Lytton usually has space. Or take Caltrain to Palo Alto, take the new underpass under the tracks.
